Home-grown weddings in an Irish country retreat
Celebrate the perfect Irish wedding within the enchanting surroundings of a country house retreat.
Steeped in history and culture 300 year old Shankill Castle is a unique romantic venue for your wedding in Ireland’s Ancient East. Home to the Cope Family since 1991, we invite you to host your wedding in our intimate and singular venue, making your special day a magical and memorable experience. Let the reception begin with drinks in the splendid drawing room with its giant mirror walls, and dine in the Gothicised dining room, or you can choose a champagne reception in our Victorian walled garden under the apple arch. The walls of the castle are adorned with Elizabeth Cope’s internationally renowned art work and the rooms are brimming with her husband, Geoffrey’s eclectic collection of antiques and objet d’art providing a resplendent environment for your celebration. Newly-weds can sneak off for a romantic stroll by the lake or an embrace in the conservatory! We will cater for your dream wedding whether it be a black-tie ball in the drawing room or a hog roast on the lawn. Experience our romantic honeymoon suite, and with generous bedrooms available in the castle, your guests can stay over for a stress free wedding in a magnificent location.
At Shankill Castle we will create for you a hearty banquet of home grown produce for your wedding. Our surroundings are lush from ancient Irish woodlands, with lime alleés, giant sequoias and laurel lawns, to formal grounds, a moated garden and walled Victorian kitchen gardens, not to mention the working farm, home to our beef herd, a few donkeys, hens and geese thrown in for good measure. The Shankill Castle estate aims to grow as much of our own food as we can. We produce fresh fruit and vegetables, homemade honey, apple juice and fresh eggs daily. We can literally grow the wedding meal and bouquet just for you!
Surrounded by deciduous and evergreen woodland Shankill Castle is a hidden romantic gem. The ambience of the castle follows the moods of the seasons for the wedding of your choice. From airy summer days when the garden is in full blooming, bees buzzing along the herbaceous border walks, to winter with crackling fires in old fire places, shutters drawn, and smoke gently rising from the numerous chimney pots.
Shankill Castle is nestled in the heart of Ireland’s Ancient East with views of Mount Leinster and the Castlecomer ridge, all just an hour from Dublin and 15 minutes from Kilkenny City.
