“ I have been a fan of Arthur Shackleton’s work for many years. He uses plants like paint, his sense of colour and design, and how he can have a rich border of exotic and ordinary flowers and then you find the edible fruits and vegetables, feeding the body and soul. Gardening is a gift and Arthur has it in his fingertips, and he has passed this gift on to his son Edward. Geoffrey and I are honoured to have Arthur speak and give a slide show at Shankill Castle. The topic is designing and planting your garden.” – Elizabeth Cope, Painter
The talk is on Saturday 8th September at 4pm in Shankill Castle, Paulstown. Co Kilkenny at €15 per person. Tickets can be booked here.
Biography: Arthur Shackleton
Arthur has over forty years of experience designing gardens. He has contributed to the design and maintenance of a wide variety of Irish gardens, large and small, including Ashford, Dromoland and Glin Castles, Lyons Demesne, Coolmore Stud and all of Sheik Mahomed’s Irish studfarms, Airfield House in Dundrum and Butler House in Kilkenny.
In 1999, Arthur transformed two derelict farm buildings and their accompanying land outside Abbeyleix, Co. Laois, into his own garden. Arthur shares Fruitlawn with artist Carol Booth and grows in the garden a wide selection of plants originally from his father, David Shackleton’s garden at Beech Park in Clonsilla. It has been called “enchanting” for its “billowing borders and quiet corners” by The Irish Garden Magazine, and has received visitors from around the world. https://www.arthurshackleton.com/
