A rural retreat for artists and creative professionals to be inspired, engage with their surroundings and focus on developing their practice. Located in an idyllic and tranquil setting, our artist residency programme offers artists the unique opportunity to step back in time and develop their work within a peaceful rural environment with spectacular vistas of green rolling hills, a serene lake and the star-filled sky at night.
With full access to the grounds of Shankill Castle, the home of Irish artist Elizabeth Cope, residents are encouraged to explore, contemplate, and create – replenished by the surroundings of fresh air, enchanting woodlands and gardens. As well as providing an artistic retreat in which to develop work, we also invite resident artists to immerse themselves in life at the castle and make themselves at home, reading books by the fire in the drawing room, playing music or attending one of our seasonal cultural events , such as art openings, film nights, and more.
We welcome artists of all mediums – painters, sculptors, ceramicists, photographers, actors, dancers, musicians, singers, composers, writers, poets, dreamers, creators, thinkers and doers – and those working locally in Ireland as well as international artists.
You are welcome to stay for a period of time from one week to 10 weeks depending on availability.
Self-catering accommodation is provided in the Dairy Cottage, a rustic open-plan renovated farmyard cottage on the border of the walled garden, approximately 200m walk from the castle. It has garden views, a writing desk, wood burning stove, wifi and a fully equipped kitchen.
